Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Malcolm’s Mountain,' though it is widely believed to refer to Saint Columba, the 6th-century missionary whose influence is deeply rooted in the surrounding Breadalbane region.
  • The standard ascent from Kirkton Farm passes the remains of St Fillan’s Priory and its ancient graveyard, marking the site of a 13th-century religious house dedicated to a saint who supposedly healed the sick in nearby Strathfillan.
  • Navigation can be deceptive in mist; the mountain features a prominent south top at 998 metres that is frequently mistaken for the true summit, which actually lies half a kilometre further north along a narrowing ridge.
  • From the highest point, the view north is dominated by the sprawling wilderness of the Moor of Rannoch, while the distinctive cone of Beinn Dorain stands out sharply to the west across the West Highland railway line.
  • The mountain is notorious for its relentless, boggy lower slopes, which can make the initial three hundred metres of ascent feel considerably longer than the map suggests.
